The streets were flooded with spectators determined to attend his mass given in Havana, an event which coincided with the 400th anniversary of the celebration of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre, patron saint of the island. Although Cuba was an atheist state in the recent past, the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Cuban government has gradually evolved.
